Homeopathy Tips for 5/18/10 Computer Programs

Of all the major advances to modern homeopathy the single greatest has been bringing the Repertory and Materia Medica into a computer format. Now with very usable tools we can analyze and search mountains of homeopathic information and have results in a fraction of a second. This makes the homeopaths job so much easier, but there are risks to having so much information so quickly.

We can all thank David Kent Warkentin of Kent Homeopathic Software for bringing us homeopathic computer programs. He was the very first programmer and the pioneer of homeopathic computer programs. His programs MacRepertory and ReferenceWorks are still the industry standard for homeopathy. I have been using them since the early 1990’s and the advances since then are truly astronomical. I still have my very old, thick, Apple laptop computer with the program still working. Someday this will be a real homeopathic antique.

Learning the repertory and studying Materia Medica are challenges for any homeopath. Nothing can replace books for this. Having a full page to view, the tactile feeling of holding the book and ability to kind of scan ahead are all part of learning from a book. I do not think computers will ever be able to replace this. There is not one homeopath I know that does not still consult their books.

I recommend computer programs for all of my students. But never right from the start. It is best to purchase the core books necessary for any practice and read them. Pick up the repertory and get used to it and learn to orient oneself within it. Learn where to find different symptoms/rubrics. This is essential to any practice. If we have the books we can always do homeopathy. It is not so easy to learn to navigate the repertory using a computer. But once you know what you are looking for it can help like no other tool.

The speed which the computer functions allows me to work quickly and accurately. Seeing many clients in a day I can quickly repertize a case and investigate remedies from Materia Medica at the click of the mouse. If I am analyzing a case I can quickly change analysis and see how the case changes very quickly. The element of speed, and different approaches are what the computer brings to homeopathy.

One setback though that can occur to novice homeopaths especially,  is that this element of speed can bring results quickly but may be too fast for the homeopath to digest. Often I will bring two or three different case analysis for a single case. This can be done very quickly. If I were to be hasty in my selections then I might miss something very important about the case. I need the element of time to ponder, allow and digest the case. Even though the computer brings speed, it does not do our thinking for us. It is a tool only. We need time to consider the case still.

I see many homeopaths that have a limited knowledge of Materia Medica want too give the top remedy that appears after the synthesis of the repertization. This is not good homeopathy. The computer will offer us as good of information as we select. Never any better. If our rubric selection is flawed, so will be the results. And as you all are becoming familiar with, homeopathy is not a one size fit’s all medicine. It is individualized medicine and must be approached with great care. Always the biggest challenge is knowing what is asking to be healed. Without that no computer in the world can help us.

So a computer program can speed up the access of information but it is still our job to be the homeopath and use our powers of observation, discernment and knowledge to do good homeopathy. The computer programs are a tool and a tool only. Except in this modern age we are blessed with one of the most indispensable tools that homeopathy has ever had. I feel that the computer programs are the single best advancement to homeopathy since Hahnemann.

One could never carry all of the books available to us; but we can in one laptop computer. Now we have the ability to search words, phrases and remedies from thousands of texts in a click of the mouse. This is an astronomical leap in available information. As a result we have at our fingertips the ability to really learn a lot from the texts that most likely we would never own in physical form. The digital age is here and homeopathy benefits from this as much or more than any other science.

Once we have collected information from Materia Medica searches we can create rubrics and import them into the repertory and factor this into the case analysis. Being able to search exact phrases can sometimes lead to a perfect remedy where the symptom had never been translated to the Repertory. We are now able to create new rubrics and extract new information from the simple word search tool. If we relied on scanning a book this is something that may never occur and would take hours to days, if not weeks, considering the many texts available in the computer programs.

So to all of the advances in homeopathy in the last 200 years the single greatest advancement is the computer and processing programs. The digital age is here and homeopathy has benefited. We can all be better homeopaths as a result of the computer program. We can now work faster, utilize more information and synthesize it like never before.  Hahnemann I am sure would have agreed.

    Good morning,

I am not yet a homeopath, but I have treated my own family and animals for over 15 years….can someone please let me know or recommend a homeopathic software which I can use…obviously I do not work as a homeopath but I have had great success with my own kids and animals for acute conditions….saving a lot of stress for the animals & kids and a lot of doctors time 🙂
I am planning to start a remote homeopathy course in the autumn so I could actually eventually be of help not just to my own family but also others.

Thanks for listening & sharing your views,

    Cheers

Thanks for a good overview of why computers are good for homeopathy! David will be pleased you mentioned his programs.

Vips — Kent Homeopathics has a good basic program that even non-homeopaths could use.

      Hi Mah-jabeen,
I have developed an online homeopathic repertizing program with links to Materia Medica. Unfortunately it is not ready for release just yet. When it is I will let you know. It has features that are not available with other programs. You will be able to work on a case analyze it, research remedies and publish it if you choose. You will be able to get help from other users. I need to create a tutorial but due to so many of life’s challenges I have not completed the task yet. When I do I will let everyone know. Thanks,

    Dear Robert
There is also one more problem that the data is usually upgraded/updated by the persons who are not homeopaths only data entry operators and they usually make mistakes as i have seen in at least 3 softwares some rubrics which have opposite meaning contain same medicines or a comma or full stop is missed that changes the meaning of whole phrase. I agree with you that the softwares are only the tools and should be used like tools only.

I have found that even when I repartize accurately, the remedy best suited for the case is not very often the first one on the graph. ( If I’m lucky it’s at least on the radar :)) Further investigation is necessary to determine which remedy fits what is asking to be healed. The benefit is that the software helps weed out the many many remedy choices, and thereby saves alot of time, but it can’t do it all (thankfully or there wouldn’t be a need for us)! The computer program undoubtedly is a wonderful tool but it is important to remember that is what it is …a tool.

    Dear Sir,
Using computerised Repertories , no doubt saves time of Homoeopaths , but I feel, after selecting the remedy using a computer , the homoeopath shoud look at the case again & also read the specific remedies suggested by the computer and use his own judgment infixing the first remedy & potency. This will really do good to the patient.

Thank u Dr. for good information. Yes it is true that the computer programme is an asset to Homeopathy as our homeopaths can reach to the conclusion very fast. But at the same time there is a risk of hastyness because of speed
which can lead to wrong selection of medicine. Soit is better that one should first use the traditional methods of referring meteria medica , repertary etc at the initial stage. Of course computer programme is a great help to the leading and well experienced homeopaths as their time will be utilised much effectively so that a major sector of public can be served when compared to their past.

    Robert,
On one hand, I see the truth in what you have said, but on the other hand, I think that things have gotten a bit out of hand if we think we need that many rx and need to keep track of that many sx. I can think of a practitioner, and he is not alone, who would actually find the computer would slow him down. He treats in excess of 100 cases per day with an enviable cure rate and he has all the information he needs in his head. Of course he is not concerning himself with thousands of rx and their miriads of sx. While we can acknowledge the value of the computer, perhaps we should also try to understand how previous generations, and even some now can do so well without so much complication.

    Dear Sir,

It is an excellent article on how homoeopathy softwares such as “RADAR” are effective tools to the most of the efficient homoeopaths of today. One should be careful in giving the symptoms to the computer. If you fed the Wheat to the flour machine you will get wheat flour. Like wise if you fed wrong symptoms to the computer you will get garbage repertory results. This is one very danger and homoeopath should be very caustiously select the symptoms from the patients while case taking and fed to the computer and see the medicines which are most likely suitable to select and administer. EVEN THOUGH WHAT EVER REPERTORIZATION A HOMOEOPATH DOES BY MANUALLY OR BY USING HOMOEOPATHY SOFTWARE ULTIMATE JUDGE IS HUMAN BEING AND NOT THE MACHINE TO SELECT THE RIGHT SIMILIMUM.

with warm regards M R Bahadur Singh

Repertorization of homeopathic mdicines by computer soft wares sounds amazing,
timesaving and easy to select the similimum. Then the question arises, Can a
computer take the wisdom of human brain, and one can rely on the selection of
medicine by such soft ware. Prescribing a medicine is a matter of life and death
for a patient. More over repertorization requires analysis of highier senses
of human brain such as hate and love. Which is a very extraordinary symptom
in human being. It changes from circumstance to circumtance. or it may be the tool
of human brain to react to an ambience. Can a computer soft ware detect a lie or truth
if a patient is telling a lie or truth. Under chapter “opium” Dr.E.B.NAsh has written
that he treated a patient for his ailment with Opium after all the medicine failed
to act, only because he found that the patient was a great lieyer. If it is so simple
then why to study Anatomy, Phsiology and Pharmacology.

    Dear Dr Robert:
A few comments – While David Warkentin is to be applauded for composing MacRep, there were earlier attempts by others. Dr R.P. Patel tried to market a software repertory in early 1970s but the venture fell through. The early Card Repertory and Auto-visual repertory were semi-mechanical methods of repertorising.
I personally use Hompath MD & Mercurius computer repertories. Of late, I am relying more on the Hard Copy Synthetic repertory as it focuses more on Generals, Mentals, Modalities, Sleep, Dreams etc and leaves out many minor particular symptoms. One deficiency with Computer repertorising is that when excess of rubrics are used, it leads to the wrong remedies in the topmost list. Although it takes time, I prefer when computer repertorising to try repertorising online first with Kent’s rubrics, then Boenninghausen’s then Complete’s etc to see whether there was agreement. Of course, if it is a rare remedy found only in Complete’s rubrics, then agreement from the other 2 approached will not happen. But Computers certainly makes Homeopaths work very mobile while travelling etc. Dr Sankaran has come out with a computer repertory that is based on key words uttered by a patient that pont to a remedy family. I wish the software companies would come out with a software repertory that plays back the sound of different types of coughing to recognize a remedy (hacking, sawing, dry, loose, rattling etc). Would make acute prescribing a little easier, I hope. Thanks, Philip

It takes quite a lot of time to become master of any computer software, specially homoeopathic softwares.
The best way to be able to prescribe quickly is mastering techinque of case taking.i,e, collecting patient symptoms. No computer can help in that except your own ….

  25. Rooksie on

Facinating! I always thought that using homeopatic computer programs was a cop out – the lazy homeopaths way.
Thank you for showing me otherwise and for posting this information well into the 2nd year of your newletters which I have been following avidly since day one. I probably would not have been able to hear this information from you earily.

with respect for all that you’ve taught me

  26. Dr.Sarfaraz Ali on

Actually basic thing is continous reading and even reading when you are treating a case.It is astonishing that while Homeopath is treating a patient and he keeps his books on table and on each visit patient sees his doctor reading the book, the patien does not mind that Homeopath is learning all the time from book, rather he says to others that dr. also reads very much. The patient also remains happy that Dr. takes pain and keeps abreast with the knowledge. While in allopathy I find that if Dr. is always on books, it is thought that perhaps Dr. has not learnt anything.
As regards student life in a institute or hopmeopahic college, materia madica books start right from the first year.I have heard a story that one student was not writing answers on the exam.sheet, invigilator asked why are u not writing, student said I have got no book.
Any how reading is very good and computer programming does not seem to be good for learner.
