Homeopathy Tips for 8/21/12 Bad vrs Wrong Prescriptions

No homeopath always gives the correct prescription the first time. Some homeopaths feel that a wrong prescription is also a bad prescription. I disagree. I feel there is a distinct difference between a bad prescription and a wrong prescription. This is all up to the homeopath doing the prescribing.

I often tell my students that they can not do homeopathy wrong if they are following some good guidelines for the practice of homeopathy. But even with good guidelines there is a point where the homeopath must make a decision about the remedy and what to do. This is often made to be too complicated on the part of the homeopath. Homeopathy can be simple but this all depends on the homeopaths state of mind, knowledge and intention.

A bad prescription is one that is made without certainty. The most common pitfall for new homeopaths is lack of knowledge and the feeling they need to do something with the client. Unless it is an emergency that requires quick action, any undue stress on the part of the homeopath will only lead to a bad prescription. The homeopath needs to have a clear mind and no agenda. Only then can they be the channel for knowing. If the need to find the remedy is forefront in the homeopaths mind they will only rush to make a decision. Most often this leads to failure.

The decision to give a remedy comes with many other decisions that have already been made in regards to the case. The first and foremost is “what is asking to be healed” Only after this is very clear and settled for the homeopath can a correct prescription be made. If it is not, bad rubrics will be chosen, incorrect remedies for the case will appear and bad prescriptions follow. And if during this process anxiety is present about the case, the process or the remedy chosen, a bad prescription will follow.

Following bad prescriptions the homeopath will usually second guess themselves. Have more anxiety about the case, lose sleep and generally suffer about it. This is what makes a prescription bad. There should be no anxiety and only confidence after a prescription.

When a homeopath is very clear in their mind and it is settled, the case will be clear also. They will know what is asking to be healed. They will choose rubrics based on the core energy of the case. The remedies to choose from will be good and well-selected remedies. Then upon further investigation of the remedies the unique and perfect remedy can be chosen. But even after going through this, sometimes the remedy does not seem to work. Has the homeopath made a mistake? I do not think so.

If the homeopath has clear intention and attention with the case and does good homeopathy, he/she will be settled in their heart. There will be no anxiety. With a very clear conscience they will sleep well at night and know that the very best has been given. Even if the remedy turns out to be wrong and does not help, this is not a bad prescription. It is simply a wrong prescription. And it is not a mistake.

If the homeopath does the very best they can and is settled in their mind and heart,  then there could not be a mistake. The client and the homeopath came together by mutual agreement. All that is revealed during the interview is sacred. Recognizing our roles and doing the very best puts us into divine accord. Our conscience becomes our guide. Therefore it would not be a mistake to do our best, but only a wrong prescription was given. When this occurs for me I have no guilt or suffering. I just retake the case and move forward. There are no accidents.

The difficult part of being a homeopath is that there is no guide written for this process. It is a process of spiritual self-evolution. The linear part of homeopathy is easy by comparison. We must have constant vigilance in regards to our self. Only we know when we are doing right and wrong. Our conscience is a very good indicator. Bad prescriptions happen when we are not following this guide. Wrong prescriptions can happen to any homeopath. But bad prescriptions happen when we are not acting from our highest most. Then we can lose our integrity and give a remedy or recommendation without being sure inside of ourselves.

Set your intention daily to do the very best you can and to do it with confidence. If you do not have confidence in what you are doing it will lead to bad prescriptions. Study often and each case will become a little easier. Always follow your conscience. It will be your best guide. Then when the client returns and says that nothing has happened and the remedy did not work you will welcome the moment. Your ego will not be bruised because you know you gave the very best remedy. Yes it may not have worked and was a wrong prescription, but it was not a bad prescription. You will learn the very most from these cases and you will sleep well at night knowing you are a good homeopath.

By reading these tips I feel more and more appreciative of Homeopathic treatment philosophy . I am not a practitioner of Homeopathy but keen to understand Homeopathy through books, e-magazine and articles in magazines/news papers.

Like Shanti Kumar Jain, even though I am not a practitioner of Homeopathy, I keep learning about it. I know it often works. Several of my ailments have been cured by homeopathy. For example: My seasonal allergy to rag weeds has been cured by constitutional homeopathy. I have found symptomatic homeopathy of great in many simple ailments, e.g., traumatic injuries, pain following dental procedures, early symptoms of cold and sore throat, indigestion, etc. It is safe, without side effects, and eliminated the need to take allopathic medicines. I carry a homeopathic kit when I travel. Recently a I consulted a Constitutional homeopath for my chronic symptoms of heaviness of both legs, off and on. Her treatment was effective in mostly relieving the symptoms, without a total cure. I would say I improved 80%. Being an allopathic doctor, I developed confidence in homeopathic based on my own personal experience.

I enjoy ‘Homeopathic Tips” that I find of great interest.

When a patient says there has been no change, I always go through the case and ask about specific symptoms. Often the individual will say something like ‘ oh yeah, that….no it’s gone. Homeopathy is often so subtle that the patient sometimes forget they even had some of the sx.

If the selected remedy is correct then patient will feel better and cured permanently even if physical improvement does not occur. Patient will feel worst first and will feel better later. If the selected remedy is not correct, the patient will feel better but worse afterwards and return to the original state. Similarly with correct dose patient feel mild aggravation and then improves. On the other hand if the dose in incorrect then the patient will feel strong aggravation but no cure. Then it is necessary to give a milder dose and wait.

    Hi Robert

The homeopathy always need both patients and physician to be patient and far from the obstacles which block the cure most of the time.

Very thought provoking topic. A wrong prescription is a relative term. In my experience, for acute conditions prescribing a wrong remedy happens more often than in a chronic condition. In acute conditions, quick reaction is needed to keep pace with the acute illness, so a wrong remedy may miss the mark easily. In chronic conditions, a wrong remedy that is in the same vegetable or animal or mineral kingdom line is known to stimulate the body to at least react and start sometimes a self healing process. Closely allied remedies (none of which may be the similimmum) can jump start a healing process – such as Glonoine or Belladonna, Kali remedies or Causticum, Cactus G or Cactina, Calcarea Phos or Calcarea Hypophos, Ferrum Met or Ferrum Phos etc. I can’t say this works all the time, but often when I don’t have a remedy in stock and I suggest a close cousin remedy that I have in stock, it starts the healing process. If we think about Hahneman’s successful practise in Paris, he had only a repertoire of maybe 75 to 100 proven remedies. How was he so successful if he had such a limited Matera Medica compared to present day Homeopathic pharmacy that can make a homeopathic remedy out of almost anything on earth or (Mars, now that Curiosity may bring back some Martian dust)……….All jokes aside, the human body and spirit is very resilient and responds to a wrong remedy in some people with some degree of success. This topic is very interesting and practioners should experiment so Homeopathy can be consistent in practice and method. I often deliberately take a close remedy but not the similimmum to see what the result would be (Allium Sativa instead of Allium Cepa for running cold just to see if it would have the curative effect as the similimmum Allium Cepa would). In my experience both are equally good if the symptoms are generally covered. However, many homeopaths may get angry with me but I wish only peace and constant experimentation to say with certainity that a rule is a rule. I often wonder how the Banerji Homeopathic protocols work. Here they prescribe “wrong remedies” based on diagnosis (brain cancer, bone cancer, leukaemia, pancreatic cancer etc) and not on classical method and yet they have success too. But Thank You Dr Robert, you have provided a challenging topic where the experience of you and others gives basic foundation so we can walk and learn as we walk the road of Homeopathy. Sincerely, Philip

Your Quote: The first and foremost is “what is asking to be healed” Only after this is very clear and settled for the homeopath can a correct prescription be made.

    ——————————-

Homeopathic prescription is both a science and an art in itself. The aim of the physician is to heal as it is termed Aphorism I.

So the person who knows the art of healing, must know the similia and totality but it is ofcourse difficult fo find totality of

symptoms for prescribing a remedy. It is the personal difference in different cases that lead us to select different medicine in

different cases and it can not be called a wrong prescribing or a bad prescribing. Any one who goes through the materia

medica, finds each and every medicine starts with symptoms of mind , mouth , nose , respiration, chest, stomach,

intestine, extremities , bowel, and so on. Now the art is to select a medicine from among a number of medicines with a

comparative study of most similar medicine for the case in hand and it must satisfy the characteristics of the disease with the

modalities and must fulfill the characteristics of the medicine in that particular case. There are so many similarities among the

medicines some are complimentary and some are antagonistics

suppose a patient with vomiting and diarrhea, we have a number of medicines for the case like Ipecac, Ars.alb, Capsicum, Ferrum phos,

    podophyllum, etc

Now the art is to find the similibus. So if a patient complains of vomiting and diarrhea and each times he takes water he vomits ,

with a desire to take little water at a time and having frequent thirst. At the same times the patient is very restless and weak

with loss of water from body or dehydration. This is a sure case of Ars.alb. That is the fun of the homeopathic prescription.

At the same times if some one complaints of vomiting with thirst and lot of retching and nausea. Intake of little food or drinks make him vomit. It is a case of Ipecac with out fail.

This is how a correct prescribing can be done. Now as far as a bad prescribing is concerned, only a lay man with little

knowledge or no knowledge of prescribing can do this blunder and bring disrepute to homeopathy.

what if a doctor has tried a few remedies yet none are working—–then will this harm a patient because its always written never to give many remedies????????
They are trying their best yet not working and has ended up giving many remedies ————-willt his harm the patient??????

does the patient have to wait months now to see a clear picture or can the case be retaken soon after?

Very good moral guidance and a good motivation to improve our knowledge base constantly to become quite confident about good results.
    THANK YOU.

  10. girl on

but cant a wrong prescription also cause harm to the patient——some hoempaths say even one wrong remedy can cause suppression????

what happens if an accute situation arises and hte homeopath has tried many remedies to the best of their abilitiy yet nothing is working

Then is this wrong because many remedies should not be given?
