Homeopathy Tips for 4/06/10 Quick Accurate Prescribing

There is no substitute for thoroughness in homeopathy. But it does not need to take days to prescribe the correct remedy. In fact,  I have found that the longer one mulls over the possibilities of understanding the case and remedies, the farther they get from the real energy of the case. When the case is understood well it forms the foundation for everything that follows. This is a process that does not need to take a long time.

The first step in quick prescribing is to get out of ones own way. Let go and allow. Ask for help from higher powers and be ready to see everything. When opening up this awareness and aligning oneself with a focused intent, many things will happen and be seen that otherwise would be unnoticed. Doing this simple exercise will do more to become the prejudiced observer that is necessary to “see the case”.

The next step is to align our head with our heart. This allows us to balance what we think with what we feel. It is not enough to form ideas about a case but to feel the case as well. Sometimes a story from the client will induce many thoughts and ideas as it unfolds, but if we are not feeling the case as well, we may miss the most important parts. I find that most of my students struggle with this part of case-receiving the most. Sometimes they will miss something about the case that is right there in front of them because they are “thinking” about the case too much. I try not to think at all during the case testimony. I just allow and let it flow. When thoughts about the case or the remedy arise, I let them go so I can remain open. Eventually they will arise again in the right time for me to work with later.

Find the pattern or thread of the case is the next hurdle in quick prescribing. I remember a conference I attended that Vega Rozenberg hosted in 1994. He had Jeremy Sherr, Misha Noland and Louis Klein as guests for 6 days of teaching. Vega taught using live cases. At the end of the seminar many kudos to Vega were given by these other fine, world class teachers. The biggest kudo came when they all stood together and commented on Vega’s ability to see the case. They described it as watching a movie and being able to pull the scenes from the movie that were essential to the whole story. In essence these scenes told the whole story but could be shown in a very abbreviated time. This ability allows one to “see the case” in a very quick manner. It then becomes much easier to select the right rubrics that represent the energy of the case.

There is no substitute for opening the books and getting really familiar with them. Study in homeopathy is necessary to become an accurate and quick prescriber. Having knowledge of the mind section of the repertory will make the job of selecting accurate rubrics much easier. If we do not know how to translate the symptom to a rubric then we will be lost in prescribing. Selecting the most accurate rubrics is essential.

Having knowledge of Materia Medica is also essential. It really helps to be able to distill the energy of a remedy from the Materia Medica text. Having the essence or energy of the remedies in one’s mind will make the process of selecting the best remedy much easier. Again Materia Medica study is absolutely necessary in becoming a good and quick prescriber.

There is nothing better than experience though, to gain this knowledge. Seeing many cases and learning remedies from real experience is the best way to “hook the energy” of the remedy to an actual experience. Once this happens we usually never forget. This is why I teach using live cases at Resonance School of Homeopathy. It is difficult to get this from a two dimensional grouping of words on a page that we can only form a picture of in our minds. But by reading Materia Medica text, we get familiar with the remedies and when it comes time to investigate a remedy for a case, we will gather the information much quicker; it will already be familiar.

These directions for quick and accurate prescribing are not new. But they must be practiced. I find that seeing many cases with a limited time frame to “work” on them will help learn them the quickest. I find that accurate prescribing should not be “work”. It should be an integrated process of the homeopath and come with ease. Spending too much time on a case only leads to confusion. We will mentally go over every aspect in our minds and this eventually leads to transcendental speculations. This nearly always occurs when we “work” on the case for days after the client leaves. The energy of the person is not there anymore and we will then be working from a flat piece of paper notes and our prejudices.

Develop the art of letting go. Allow the case to come to you without any agenda. Ask for help. Align your head and your heart. Study the mind section of the repertory especially. Study Materia Medica. See as many cases as you can. Do this with a good teacher or mentor and do it within a limited time frame. This will encourage you to speed up your process and with proper direction will develop into the way homeopathy is done by you. It will become your way of prescribing. It need not take a long time to come to the correct remedy. You will be a better prescriber as well.

    Hello Robert,

Thank you so much for such a wonderful article but how can one develop the art of letting go? As soon as a case comes various similar cases starts coming in my mind and it is really very difficult to be unprejudiced. How can we develop the art of letting go?
    Waiting for your reply,please help.

    Thanks once again!

      Hello Preetika,

The art of letting go is learned by practice. When a case is being presented it is natural to have thoughts of previous cases and remedies come to mind. But the art is developed by saying to ourselves, “Not now. Wait. Let go.Just be present.” We do not know what the next thing will be out of our clients mouth and so any time spent thinking while they are speaking is only distraction. Let it all come forth before analysis. It requires discipline and practice. Good luck!

      Warmest regards,
      Robert

hi if everything comes by practice and experience, then what can new practioners do?

    Dear Robert,

Your suggestion to quick prescribing is realy note worthy.
Studying the Earlier Cases of our great prescribers, vegas method (like gist of movie clips), trsnslating from symptoms to rubrics and reading materia medica text are really very good methods and yield the results.

One must read and re-read the materica text so as to gain the confidence on the drug picture. Mastering mind symptoms and translating the symptoms to rubrics is the difficult part and requires experience and some examples and methods may please be examined in your next issue.

Besides, the above one should be good at differential diagnosis, particularly on modalities which will yield very quick prescription. Last but not least, peculiar and uncommon symptoms lead faster to right remedy.

A very nice article for quick prescribing. Awaiting more in the next issue.

    With warm greetings.

      Hello Dr.

Not all processes of homeopathy are in a lineal manner. The idea of letting go really speaks to the art part of homeopathy. It is useful and some things about the art in homeopathy cannot be explained in a lineal fashion. They must be experienced. This is what I so love about homeopathy.

Also I try to speak to all of the issues in being a homeopath and try to limit the text to around 1200 characters. I am not writing a book here, and some topics with explanation cases etc would require much longer text.

Thank you for your understanding and comment.

      Hello El Siddig,

Yes the principles are useful in ALL cases. The reason I suggest to study the mental/emotionals of the Repertory is because these are the areas most homeopaths struggle with the most. It will help to be very versed in the Repertory. But the same principles of observation go with the physical cases as well. I use these same principles in every case.

      Thanks,
      Robert

    Dear Robert Sir
Your splendid and delightful article really forces one to think deeply. “No substitute to hard work” fits in Homeopathy too. Sustained study, continuous analysis and deep thinking automatically takes one to such a mental zone that leads to quick prescription. The zone is like a trans.
    Am I right, Sir

    With thanks & regards

    • Robert Field on

      Hello S K Kalra,

The “zone” is not a trans. A trans is something like a state one could not function out of. The “zone” as you refer to is not really something that I try to achieve. It is not a different state of consciousness. The state of mind is one of active awareness without an agenda. There is nothing to do but watch and wait. When the thoughts arise, acknowledge them and let them go immediately. This requires an active participation but one that is in a mode of allowance. “Not my will but G-ds will shall be done.” This really kind of explains it best. If we recognize our part in the “play”, we only need to show up and listen without prejudice. Only after we have heard enough are we then ready to know what is asking to be healed so we can select the proper rubrics and remedy. I hope this helps,
      Robert

    Dear Dr. Robert,

We have a friend who is suffering acute pain on the ankle. So on checking up with the case, we found the ankle had developed a swell and the ball of the feet was making her suffer from chronic pain whilst she use to wear shoes or sandals etc. While checking up the repertory, we found the remedy called Byronia 200 power in liquid form which was adminsitered to her. Still no results. So on further checking with the reportory, we prescribed Ledium Pal for agnoizing pain but sometimes she found relief but the swelling on her feet has improved by 2 percent but the pain which moves upward while she stands on her left leg is very severe which cannot bear it. One of our other friend has recommended her to see an Orthopedician who it seems has treated such patients and has acheived results by injection which is given three times. They have told her now they dont require any medication but doctor has given calcium tablets. She happened to go to a chemist whom she related about the pain the chemist told her to take AMOCYLIN 400 mg. which she takes and has found improvement but after a day or two the pain starts and she has to take the same tablet as now she is hooked to it. Can you Doctor suggest some good remedy and so we could advise her not to go for the injection as told by her friends.

Doctor we would appreciate if you could throw some light on this issue.

    Best regards

    Celes

    • Robert Field on

      Hi Celes,

This is not a complete case. There is a story and a reason her body wants to do this. This is what you need to find out. The modalities of the case and the etiology will be important to understand. Ask why she is having to experience this and how it servers her or is the perfect solution . Then you will know what is asking to be healed and can find a very good remedy.

  8. Cindy on

    Greetings Dr. Field,
I only have personal experience practicing Homeopathy. Before my children could talk and they were sick, I would just know what to do for them and myself. When my children were young and they could talk, I found it beneficial to listen to what they were telling me and relate to my little book of remedies. My kids grew up without having to see regular doctors. Now of course, they don’t want to listen to me!
I completely understand what you mean by listening to what the outside forces are telling you. Most people as you said need to learn to listen. I am a nutritionist (my degree is in nutrition sciences and I have done a dietetic internship, just need to take the test) and I’ve been thinking of attending your school. Thanks for all of the great information.
