Homeopathy Tips for 5/14/13 Multiple Sclerosis

Of all serious nerve disorders Multiple Sclerosis is one of the most common and easily treated with homeopathy. Everyone I have treated has improved over time. But cure takes a while and with the interference of drugs the homeopathic approach to healing can be compromised. Lets take a look at this disease and learn some more.

Multiple Sclerosis or MS is scarring of the myelin sheath around nerves.  This disorder happens when patches of the myelin and underlying nerve fibers in the eyes, brain and spinal cord are damaged or destroyed. This can be caused by viral infection, or auto immune response where the body attacks its own myelin. Heredity plays a small role in perhaps 5-15% of all cases, with a relative experiencing MS also. MS can have periods of remission followed by flare ups and a gradual decline over a persons lifetime.

The nerves affected determine the type of symptoms the person has. They can be sensory, motor or Psychological symptoms. Sensory symptoms include numbness or pains that can be burning or itching. Visual disturbances include double vision, blurred vision or loss of central vision. Dizziness and vertigo can occur also.

Motor symptoms include weakness, clumsiness, tremor, ataxia with difficulty walking. Symptoms can effect the bowels or urination. Probably the most common physical effect is fatigue. Along with physical symptoms there can be mood swings, elation or giddiness, depression, inability to control the emotions and mental impairment.

The most common first symptoms to occur are fatigue with tingling, numbness or itching often in the hands face or feet with a loss of dexterity. Some people develop only eye symptoms such as a partial blindness, blurred vision or pain in one eye. It is usually from these symptoms that a first diagnosis of MS happens.

Diagnosis is best done through understanding the symptoms and a physical examination of the nervous system. An MRI is used to image the brain and spinal cord looking for lesions that are confirmation for MS.

The usual western medical approach to MS is Cortico-steroid drugs like Prednisone for acute symptoms. These drugs can not be given for extended periods of time so are usually of a short duration. Interferon-beta injections are given to help reduce the frequency of relapses. There are other drugs used for acute symptoms and the newer drug Copaxone is given to stop the progression of the disease. All of these approaches are suppressive and usually interfere with the homeopathic approach. My observation is that all of the persons I have treated have had a cessation in the progression of the disease at the very least. Many have very marked improvement in motor function and sensory functions. I have yet to see a case go to cure because in every case the client has had western drug therapy at the same time as being treated homeopathically. This is the reality of modern medicine.

As you can see by the remedies that come up most of the polycrest remedies are useful in MS. Keep in mind Ars, Arg., Aur., Bell., Calc., Caust, Con., Kali Phos., Phos., Plat., Plumb., Rhus Tox., Sil. these all include a fair amount of nerve symptoms. Smaller, more specific remedies for MS include;

  • Agaricus Muscarius – Agaricus acts as an intoxicant to the brain. In-coordination and awkwardness. Sensation as if pierced by needles of ice. Loquacity. Indisposed to work. Double vision. Spasms of accommodation. Twitching. Uncertain gait with weakness in the limbs.
  • Alumina – Paralysis, slow and dry. Constipation. Confusion of identity. A feeling as if another person has spoken or seen on their behalf. Morbid impulse on seeing knives or blood. Hasty, time passes slowly and they feel hurried. Staggers on walking. The pin prick is felt later. Weakness and ataxia. Feet and heels numb.
  • Crotalus Horridus – From the Rattlesnake. Nervous prostration with trembling. Sleeps into symptoms. Mumbles and jumbles their words. Loquacity with a desire to escape. Double vision or blurred vision. Restless legs.
  • Curare – Arrow poison. Affects the muscles and the brain causing paralysis of the muscles but without impairing consciousness or sensations. Indecision, no longer wants to think or act for themselves. Inability to think, study. After an accident. Excited hurried feeling, Depressed and desire to be alone. Reflex action diminished or abolished. Numbness and tingling. Arms feel heavy and weak. Legs tremble and give way. Diabetes.
  • Lathyrus – Reflexes increased. Paralytic weakness of the lower limbs. Useful in wasting and exhaustive diseases where nerve recovery is slow. Sleepy, constant yawning. Excessive rigidity of the legs with spastic movement. Foot drag. Can not lift legs while lying down. Numbness followed by pain in the lower limbs. Sensation as of a band around the body.
  • Physostigma – Muscular prostration and paralysis. Depressed motor and reflex action. Tetanus. Contraction of pupils. Averse to bathing in cold water. Ataxic gait with shooting down the limbs. Mind active even in sleep. Counts continually. Too many things in the room. Paralysis of mind and body after grief. Vision affected. Myopia and astigmatism. Numbness in hands and feet.
  • Picric Acid – Prostration, weakness, pain and pins and needles sensation. Worn out persons, mentally and physically. After too much sex, alcohol and study. Dread of failure in the exam. Lack of will power to undertake anything. Lascivious thoughts. Idea of marriage unendurable. Acute ascending paralysis. Great weakness. Worse exertion.
  • Zincum Metallicum – Zinc poisons the brain and nerves. Tissues are worn out faster than they can be repaired. Trembling, convulsive twitching and restless feet. Intolerance to wine and wine aggravates all symptoms. Isolated effects; one part numb another part sensitive. One part hot another part cold. Sensitive to noise. Weak memory. Child repeats everything that is said to him. Blurring of one half of the vision. Stumbling spastic gait. Lightning like pains in ataxia.

By no means is this a final list of remedies that may be useful but some that I have found to benefit MS sufferings. As with all cases one must look at the whole person to prescribe effectively. Mental symptoms are always necessary as well as the physical symptoms. Always listen to the case and understand what is asking to be healed. Only then will the correct remedy be found.

Because most people who come to the homeopath as a result of a previous diagnosis, most are taking suppressive drugs for their MS symptoms. I have found that daily dosing has worked best and shown the more consistent healing effects. I usually start the case with a 6C potency given daily. If the response is too much then putting the remedy in water or giving LM potencies will help. Because MS is a degenerative disease the person has suffered for some time already before symptoms appear. I always look for movement in the case and have an extended view of healing for them. If they experience a greater sense of well being, more energy, and a lessening of the physical symptoms I trust the remedy is inspiring a healing response. Bi-monthly evaluations are usually good to see how progress is being made. It is always good to do a yearly review and see how much improved they are in relation to starting homeopathic treatment. When drugs are being taken I see that progress is slower. But I have yet to see a case continue to degenerate under homeopathic care that is working.

Receive a good case. Select good, undeniable rubrics from their symptoms. Search Materia Medica and give a remedy for them as a whole person and not just the disease. Stay low in potency and repeat daily. Change potency when movement ceases. Take the long view in this disease and the slow and steady approach nearly always works.

There is also a correlation between asparatame use and ms symptoms, so it may be helpful to have the patient stop drinking diet drinks or using artificial sweeteners.
