Homeopthy Tips for 10/19/10 Multiple Sclerosis

Nerve fibers inside and outside of the brain are wrapped with many layers of tissues composed of fat. This fat layer is called myelin. These layers form the myelin sheath. This allows the nerve impulse to travel quickly and accurately through the body. If the myelin sheath becomes damaged the nerve impulse does not conduct normally. One of the main disorders of the myelin sheath is Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis means scaring in many places. When the myelin sheath is attacked by virus, infection or an auto-immune response it can cause a demylination of the sheath. Then the nerves do not conduct properly and it can effect the sensory system,  motor system and mood.  Multiple Sclerosis, also known commonly as MS, can have many symptoms and is often difficult to diagnose in the early stages.

The most common symptoms are nerve tingling or paralysis effecting the extremities or the face. The sensations are usually abnormal and can include tingling, burning, numbness, and itching. Eye symptoms and vision can be affected. Difficulties in walking or balance may occur. Sometimes the mood can be affected with mood swings, inappropriate elation, depression or inability to control the emotions. Partial blindness, double vision, loss of central vision, or pain in one eye happens in a small number of sufferers. When the symptoms affect the physical motor nerves, weakness, clumsiness, tremor, and difficulty walking with foot drop is common.

MS effects more women than men. There are about 400,000 in the United States that have MS. It effects the age group from 20 to 40 years old most often and heredity can play a small part of the causation. About 15% of all cases report that a close relative also has the disease. Accidents and trauma can sometime trigger the disease as well as vaccination. One of my clients reported that at a convention on MS one of the attendees asked the question whether Hepatitis B vaccine had any causation. The doctor replied no. But out of a group of 20 sufferers in attendance 5 raised their hands and said that their MS started after the Hepatitis B vaccine. Statistically this is a very high number and convinced me of the correlation.

Diagnosis is most often through an MRI. The lesions can be seen fairly easily. There is no known cure and treatment is usually with corticosteroid drugs for short times. Symptoms seem to come and go in most people and progresses slowly. Rarely is it fatal. People can usually continue an active lifestyle. For some heat can aggravate so hot showers or the heat of the sun should be avoided.

Homeopathy offers more help than any other modality. All clients I have seen have improved. Some are symptom free but I would not venture to say cured at this time. It seems the most common shadow of the dis-ease is fatigue under stress. As with all homeopathic cases, careful attention must be payed to the mental/emotional state of the person. There is always a component that is linked to the physical expression of the disease. Find the root of the illness always.

As you can see by the number of remedies included in the rubrics that there are many remedies available to treat this dis-ease. Remember that all dis-ease is for the person and not the dis-ease. So the prescription should be for the whole of the person and what makes their expression of it unique. Here are some more common remedies that are not of the polycrests. Read each of these remedies in your Materia Medica to learn more;

  • Agaricus Muscarius – Agaricus acts as an intoxicant to the brain and effects cerebral excitement and lowering of reflexes, paralysis. The sensations of tingling and being pierced by needles of ice can be present. Jerking in extremities. Diagonal symptoms. Involuntary laughter. Gait uncertain. Ataxia.
  • Alumina –  Alumina has a paralyzing and slowing effect. Sluggish functions, heaviness, numbness and staggering. It affects the nerves with delayed action. The pin prick is felt with a delay.  It core sphere is on the cerebral-spinal axis causing disturbances in coordination. Loco-motor ataxia,  staggering, numbness, tingling. Slowness of the bowels with constipation. Dryness.
  • Curare – Affects the nerve endings without impairing sensation. Is useful after a fall when the person always wants to protect themselves from another fall. Heaviness in the extremities. Numbness, tingling. Reflexes are lessened or abolished.
  • Kali Phosphoricum – Kali Phos affects all nerves. Nervous prostration, weakness, easily fagged by worry, stress. Lack of nerve power. Sensitive to all impressions. After effects of shock, mental or physical strain or exhaustion. Shy nervousness, depressed gloomy. Prickling, numbness and weakness of the limbs.
  • Lathyrus – Spinal affections. Dragging gait, turning in of the toes, stiffness of the knees. Over active reflexes. Weakness, heaviness and slow recovery of nerve power. Tottering gait. While lying the legs can be moved side to side but not lifted.  Reflexes greatly exaggerated.
  • Physostigma – Spinal irritation. with loss of mobility. Affects the eyes and the nerves. Tremors. Depressed motor responses and reflexes. Muscular weakness and pain leading to paralysis. Averse to cold water. Pains dart here and there. Counting continually. Too many things is the room.
  • Zincum  Metallicum –  Zinc is a poison to the nerves. Cerebral depression. The nerves are worn out quicker than they can be repaired. Great debility. Restlessness of the lower limbs. Intolerant to wine which aggravates. Fidgety feet with automatic motions of the mouth, arms and hands. Sensitive, lethargic, stupid and forgetful. Lightning pain in ataxia.  Soles of the feet are sensitive.

Multiple Sclerosis is hard to diagnose in the early stages. Be careful when evaluating a person, and if MS is suspected, have a medical evaluation. The progress of the dis-ease can then be monitored. Always receive the full case of the person. Apply the remedy to the whole of the case remembering to include any known causation. Study all of the remedies that may be applicable to the case and you will have a very good chance of helping this person arrest the further development of the dis-ease and possibly turning the dis-ease around. The western medical model says that there is no known cure and that nerves do not repair themselves. I disagree. I have seen symptoms change and the person become asymptomatic. Do good homeopathy and you can help many people. Please share any of you successes or ideas about MS. They are very welcome and many others may benefit from them.

I am forwarding to my colleagues (the ones who ‘understand’ the value of alternative therapies)

  3. michelle on

Have you seen any common mental/emotional etiology?

    • Robert Field on

      HI Michelle,

There is an observation of cases having the element of a “vertical fall” This is either from an actual fall off of a ladder for example or a fall from a position in relation to others. This can be a loss of a job or divorce, demotion etc. I have found these stories go along with the dis-ease. How a person responds is unique to them and good case-receiving will help in finding the correct mental/emotional rubrics. Investigate your MS clients and they will usually have the “vertical fall” element to their story.

      Good luck,
      Robert Field

  9. Dr. Monalisa on

The information is very valuable. THANK-YOU .
I have a query that if it is mention in physiology that nerve cannot re-generate ,then how homoeopathic medicines can change the physiology of body .If it is so, then which are the other diseases of nerve damage which can be cure ? ( My mother had TIA 2 yrs. back .She recovered within 24 hrs ,but her burning and tingling sensation of the affected part is not going though she has taken homoeopathy also. Can you provide me information regarding prognosis of my mother if i try for homoeopathy again

    • Robert Field on

      Hello Dr Monalisa,

Don’t give up. It is either that you have not found the right remedy yet or have not been on the right remedy long enough. It is easy to get discouraged when the remedy does not have quick or brilliant results. But if there is slow but steady improvement then stay the course. If there is no improvement it is a matter of re-receiving the case and finding the better remedy.

      Good luck,
      Robert Field

Do You by chance know anything about the possibilities in treating ALS?
Thx alot for a very inspiring writing!!

    • Robert Field on

      Hi Camilla,

I have had a few clients with ALS. Homeopathy can help. I have not seen the better results of symptoms improving radically but I have seen that the dis-ease progressions stops and the person feels better and has an easier time.
