Homeopathy Tips for 6/15/10 Ankylosing Spondylitis

I have had multiple requests for information about Ankylosing Spondylitis. Any disease ending with “itis” indicates inflammation. This disease is inflammation of the large joints and the spine. It results in stiffness and pain. As with any homeopathic approach to a specifically named disease one must never forget to prescribe for the person and not the disease.

Many people suffering this disease will experience early morning back pain and stiffness that is relieved as movement during the day’s activities help flexibility. Along with joint stiffness there can be muscular involvement also. Pain in the lower back is often moderated by leaning forward. Chronic expressions of the disease will leave a person in a bent over position with stooped posture. In others it can lead to a particularly stiff or erect position of the back.

If the joints between ribs and spine are inflamed it can prevent a person from expanding the chest fully to breathe. Occasionally the pain will start in the large joints like the hips, knees or shoulders. The whole body can hurt to move.

Diagnosis by western medicine is usually through the reporting of symptoms and x-ray of joint to detect wearing away of the joint or the formation of bone spurs. Treatment is is with Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and inflammation. Occasionally Corticosteroids are used for short periods of time to boost the bodies immune response.  Sometimes muscle relaxants and opiate analgesics are used to control spasm and pain. Exercise, stretching and yoga can provide flexibility and relief and are often the very best ways to control the disease along with homeopathic treatment.

As with any disease the person will suffer in many ways that are never described within a diagnosis. Mental symptoms should be understood and prescribed for homeopathically along with the particular physical symptoms.

Rubrics that may be helpful in homeopathic analysis from the complete 2009 Repertory are;

As can bee seen by the number of different remedies under Back;stiffness 394 remedies and Extremities;stiffness,joints 148 remedies it would be a difficult task to find the correct remedy with out having modalities to help differentiate the symptoms. Find out what makes the person better and worse. It is often easier to find modalities of the disease by finding what makes a person worse though. There are far more rubrics describing the aggravated state than those that ameliorate.

Investigate the history of the person and when this first began. Look into the family history. See where the disease and life has affected their mental and emotional view.  When a case has few mental symptoms we call it a one sided case. These are always more difficult to prescribe to. If you investigate you will find that there is never a purely physical case. There is always a mental and emotional component.

The leading remedy for Ankylosing Sponylitis is Rhus Toxicodendron. It covers the most common expression of the disease; stiffness of the back and joint, nighttime and morning aggravation, worse from first motion, continued motion ameliorates, better from warm applications or water, restlessness, the feeling that they are getting old.

Not all cases are Rhus Toxicodendron though. Other remedies to consider are;

  • Argentum Metallicum – Affects cartilages and joints, tearing and bruised pain, joint rheumatism without swelling, forgetful, memory poor, restlessness,anxiety about health, hurried – time passes too slowly, backache- must walk bent over with oppression of chest, cold feeling near sacrum, powerlessness in limbs.
  • Causticum – After grief, sensitive to injustice, overly sympathetic,vexed with business worries, taking care of others, weakness progressive, loss of strength, paralytic feeling of the limbs, stiffness, cramps, pain worse from cough or sneeze.
  • Kali Carbonicum – Fibrous tissues are effected, ligaments of joints and back, low back pain as if broken, sweating, weakness, pains are sharp and cutting, sensitive to atmospheric change, cold weather, startles easily, hypersensitive to pain, fear to be alone.
  • Kalmia – effects the nerves, heart and a rheumatic remedy. Pains move downward, feels as if broken, locomotor ataxia, wandering rheumatic pains.

There are very many more remedies that could be used for the person suffering this disease. Always remember to treat the person and not the disease. The dis-ease is an expression of the vital force and is the same vital force that will heal it. It must be inspired to respond from a well selected remedy. The person is far more than the diagnosed disease; use good modalities, physical observation and mental symptoms to help find the similimum. There is not much hope of ever healing this disease from the drugs that are offered by allopathic medicine. But with homeopathy we can really help a person to heal and have a very happy, pain-free life.

    Good morning,
    Every physical malady makes us understand what type of constitution we are dealing with. In case of Ankylosing spondylitis we get an vague idea that this person could be having sedentry lifestyle for long period of life means mental work more than the physical work.Means his/her movements are restricted.Now to analyse his emotional quadrant becomes easy.This definately take us closer to our hunt for the similimum for the patient.

    dear sir, i have seen a number of cases of ankylosing spondylitis( chemically verified ones) at my teacher’s OPD ,most of the cases respond very well in terms of good symptomatic relief to Acid Flouricum, Argentum Met, Kali Bichromicum , Medorrhinum & Rhododendron.. the potency game matters here out of sheer trial & error , but most commonly ascending scale of potency works the best. it is important to remember though that this is an autoimmune malady hence careful prescribing is a must . also make a note that development of eye & repiratory symtpoms are part of its natural history lest some Homoeopaths make it a mockery of suppression! (point is read it up from a good standard text book of clinical medicine )
    Rhododendron is my most frequently used remedy with good results in this malady( sorry about not being classical & sorry about stating a favorite remedy but this is a sharing platform )

    Dear Friends,

    Spondylosis is a condition that refers to the disorders resulting from the chronic inter-vertebral disc(s) degeneration. This condition is specially liable to interfere with the blood supply in the spinal cord and thus lead to further damages. It is usually characterized by back pain and stiffness relieved by movements.

    In my experience some homoeopathic remedies play well:
    1. Arnica-200, 2. Acid phos-200 (both twice daily)and Ginseng-Q + China-Q (10 drops each in 1/2 cup lukewarm water should be taken twice a day for best result). Besides the remedies; exercise, deep breathing, sleeping over hard-bed (without pillow), warm fomentation nutritional diet and avoiding strains are also advised.

    Hello,

    I suffer from this disease since I am 20 and I am now 29. When I was 23, I went to see an homeopath and since then I am completly healed (no pain and X-ray of the spine normal). I took the following preparation: rux tox, pulsatilla and zinc met in low potencies (around 7CH)every day twice and as a ‘terrain’ remedy: Thuya 15CH and Sulfur 15CH, once a week
    Hope this help…it’s so good to be in good health!
