Homeopathy Tips for 6/10/08 Education

I get many questions about the study of Homeopathy and what is the best approach. I think it could be an individual preference but after training homeopaths over the last 13 years I have found that there are a few things about homeopathic education that really work. I would like to share them with you.

I have found that if a person wants to be a professional homeopath, seeing clients on a daily basis, they must really love people and being around them. This may sound a bit absurd at first. After all isn’t the job of the homeopath to be around people and help them. Yes, but you might be surprised at how many students I have talked with that have spent 3 years at some other homeopathic school and have never taken a case or spent time with clients. When they were finally introduced to a new client case they were surprised at their own reaction. I have heard everything from fear in front of the client because they did not have confidence in being a homeopath ( they have never done it before) to being very sympathetic and crying during the clients case-taking.  Being overly sympathetic to the client is the biggest hurdle for most new homeopaths.

Sympathy is to become one with the client and identify with their suffering. As the homeopath you will not be very useful to your client if you are re-experiencing you own pain or in sympathy with your client. Empathy is fine and is necessary to feel the clients suffering, but to not experience it yourself.

Another aspect of most homeopathic education is to instruct the pupil in a lot of linear information about homeopathy, ie. this remedy for this condition etc. This is fine if the goal is to learn about homeopathy. Virtually every other school I know of besides Resonance School of Homeopathy teaches in this way. In the end there will be a test to pass that will require memorization but not the integration of the material. I find that good test takers can pass these tests without a problem but have the most difficult time in becoming a homeopath and giving correct remedies. The reason for this is that they have never been taught good case-taking skills, have not spent enough time in front of clients and have a bunch of information in their minds about remedies that prejudice their ability to “see” the case. When we learn about remedies before learning about how to be an unprejudiced observer we will always want to give the remedy that comes to mind because our minds will want to justify and see the remedy in the case. This is backwards to being a good homeopath and I find is the very hardest trait to become free of once this information has been planted in the students mind.

Learning good case-taking skills is far more important than learning the remedies. If we have mastered the art of case-taking and being an unprejudiced observer we will then be able to “see” the case and know what is asking to be healed. Only then could we ever find the most correct remedy.

It is unfortunate that this aspect of the “art” in homeopathy is not being emphasized early in a student homeopath’s education. This will be the foundation of becoming a homeopath and can never be evaluated by written tests. This in my opinion is the greatest downfall of modern homeopathy today. There are not enough teachers training students to be homeopaths and too many teachers are teaching only about homeopathy. There is only one way to learn to become a homeopath and it is by doing it. We need more schools based on case-taking and a mentor-ship program that gives the student the support and opportunity to learn while being in the role of homeopath. It is through this type of program that the student can really gain confidence and go out into the world and help a lot of people. This is why I teach in the manner I do.

I agree with your views . In fact most of the homeopathic institutions lack this approach .

Hi my name is Cheryl,(little intro) I was fortunate to meet a Doctor of Homeopathy (student of Geukens, Germany)who came to Australia 12 years ago. Through grace we met and I became her student.
I found that training and sitting in on cases to be so beautiful, I use to ask her if I could sit near the drivers seat-meaning next to her whilst she took the case. From here I felt that from her I could see the make the contact (feeling) to observe and watch, the inquiry and see it (feel it), using all senses.
It’s like painting a beautiful flower..
I am now wishing to further my training and re open my practice. I would love to receive as much knowledge and support as I can. I love learning, any tips, support, links-etc please-I would love hear from you.
      thank you

Thanks for sending me a good article on the Case-taking. Really the case-taking is a vital part of the Homeopathic Philosophy which is hardest technique as well as an art.It is seen that proper case-taking helps to solve many difficult cases. It is also necessary to learn about Repertorization parallely. I think last two years every homeopathic school should teach about this Art of Science and should be given opportunity to the students to hear patient’s sufferings as well.

Dear sir, thanks for a good guidance, the art of prescribing or practicing homeopathy. Though number of books are written and number of lectures given on the topic, 90% of the homeopaths are not practicing the same. This is an answerless question for me. Once again thanksfor the right message.
    with regards,

I agree with you 100% There is a need of people orientation, to get to know clients, have a more profound encounter with them, being around poeple is how we learn to deal, cope struggle and learn all the difference there is to know about people. Case taking is a vital part of learning and I recommend it all the way. With good people orientative teachers homeopath will become a better art of science and have all gods gift of being wonderful homeopath.

I agree with your vision and advise, you´re right!Homeopathy like a science and art, It needs “Learning by doing” according to the Masters Hahnemann, Kent, Hering, Allen, Boger, etc. Thanks for your issues.

I agree but how will you apply this method of case taking to your distanst learners?

    D. Thanks for asking!
All of the live classes at Resonance School of Homeopathy are videotaped and edited for easy viewing. It is as close to being in the class as possible. All online students are encouraged to take the case of each new client who comes to class. There is one small advantage the online stdent has and that is they can stop the video and think for a minute about the case. The live class does this as well but as the teacher I am keeping the pace moving. We cover alot in one weekend. Usually there are 4 new cases and 8 to 12 followups, in addition to the class discussion and lectures. So the online student gets everything that the on the ground student gets except the ability to interact. This is a deficit to be sure, but I know of no other way to share this than by the videotaped classes. All online students can attend the live classes free of charge anytime they wish.

Many Homeopathy School tody emphasize priciples and talk about drugs and healing approach that every homeopath knows but as you said art of taking case is equally important. 100% true.

THanks Dr Robert The ART to me is the most important aspect of prescribing. There is no substitute for Face to Face learning where Homeopathy is concerened.

Robert, It is plain and simple and not absurd! You have to care what you are doing and have a genuine goal of helping that individual! Thanks for your newsletters.

    Dear Sir

I have been reading your articles with great interest. I am a 46 year old male, living close to New Delhi, India.

I am interested in taking up an online Homeopathy course to become a practicing homeopath. I did my graduation in Biological sciences, i.e. Zoology, and Botany. I request you to please help me with some details e.g. the course fee, how to enrol and whom to contact.

I have a hearing probp;em due to a severe sensorineural hearling loss in both the ears, and use hearing aids. Will this be an obstacle in my persuance for the above course?

I look forward for your response.
Thanking you and with best regards
    Sincerely
    Manoj Mathur

    Dear Manoj,

The course fee is $235.00 per month with a 12 month commitment. OR a one time fee of $2,700.00 for the year (12 monthly sessions) If you have a good internet connection and a pair of headphones that work with your computer I think you will be able to hear this just fine. You can get much more information from the website at http://www.resonanceschoolofhomeopathy.com
You are very welcome to study with our school.

    Dear Dr Robert:
Thank you for your article. It is very insightful. There is nothing that will take the place of face to face real time case taking. In the case of Resonance, the video cases do just that. I have struggled in my homeopathic life to address the illnesses of friends who wanted me to prescribe over the phone instead of in person. In this regard I found a guide homeopathic book “Probing the Mind and other Guiding symptoms” by late Dr S.M. Gunavante (a homeopathic doctor) very useful. The book in itself is only 31 pages. But written on a lifetime of experience. J.T. Kent’s Minor Writings (P: 598) also provides advice on the ‘art’ of homeopathy.
“The Art of Case taking in Homeopathy” by Dr Ramanlal P. Patel is also a great guide. With these under your belt, when one sees the next homeopathic case video, you are better equipped to understand the case. Still, the video observation or face to face is needed eventually. Homeopathic Case taking is like SURGERY or taking WEDDING VOWS, one can read about it all you want, but to experience it brings the reality home……Thanks & Good-will

This is very helpful note for the aspiring homeo doctor. The articles like this one need to be read and read for many times.Homeopaths should be more studious for gaining success in their life.
